My Thoughts on Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures: A fantastic movie that shows an interesting part of US history.

So, I just finished hidden figures and I honestly liked it more than I thought I would. The movie follows three black women who work for NASA during the 1960’s and it shows the struggle of not only women in the workforce but black women in the workforce. The main plot point was the launch of the friendship 7, which allowed the first US astronaut to orbit the earth.

Overall, I thought it was a fantastic movie. The fact that it was two hours did worry me a bit because I wasn’t sure if the movie was going to be drawn out or not, because a lot of historical movies tend to just keep going and they often don’t feel like they go anywhere. I was happy that the pacing kept up well and there never really seemed to be a lull in the movie’s atmosphere. I loved all the acting as well, especially with Jim Parson’s character and his interaction with Katherine. He was extremely unlikable and discriminatory against her, but she just kept pushing forward, and it really showed a dynamic of what that part of the country was like at the time.

I always found learning about the 50’s and 60’s quite interesting, especially given a lot of the feelings towards racism that we’re seeing right now. To me I find it incredible that, at one point, we had segregated restrooms, cafeterias, libraries, and basically every common thing you see in a city. While the segregation in Wisconsin probably wasn’t as bad as it was in the southern US, I still find incredibly hard to even imagine a society that worked like it did way back then. Obviously, I can’t ignore the fact that it segregation still exists today and there are many people who still think like they did in the 60’s, I get that. But for me personally I couldn’t treat people like that, and that might just be because I was born now but still.
