Battle of the Sexes: A Quality Sports Story That Needs To Be Told
Fox Searchlight Productions |
The movie I chose to review, The Battle of the Sexes, was a
shocking movie that instilled emotions in me that I didn’t think it would.
The
movie follows the 1973 tennis match between 29-year-old women’s champion Billie
Jean King and 55-year-old player Bobby Riggs. The movie also delves into the
ongoing fight between men’s and women’s sports, sexism, and even homophobia.
Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, for the sole purpose
that it invoked a lot of weird emotion in me. I hate seeing any form of discrimination,
whether it being racism, sexism, homophobia, and so on. In my mind, I knew this
movie would be about sexism, and but I wasn’t expecting there to a “love
triangle” aspect between Billie Jean and Marilyn. I’m glad it did have a major
impact on the plot, but I just found myself very tense at the idea of these
misogynistic men, which I believe was the point.
However there are two parts that I didn’t enjoy about the
film, one was that it was a bit boring I feel in the beginning. I had a bit of
a hard time sitting through the first half an hour, but once I got past it I
couldn’t stop watching. I wanted to know what happened. Obviously it’s an American
movie so the main character wins the game, but getting to that point was a bit
interesting. The second point was the love making between Billie Jean and
Marilyn. Now I know it was very important for something like that to happen, it
established the characters well, but to me I felt too close to it. However for me
personally, I don’t like to watch other people make out in general. Male and female,
male and male, female and female, doesn’t really matter to me.
To be honest I sort picked the movie on a whim, it sounded
interesting and went from there. Now that I know a bit more about Billie Jean
King, and how she was a major advocate for Women’s Rights and LGBTQ rights, I
feel like I can appreciate her more. The work that she did for that, and it seems
to really stem from this one match.
Overall, if you haven’t watched this movie, I highly
recommend it. You would be missing out.
